Wedding Week in Barcelona

These are some of the pictures from the days leading up to (and following) our wedding in July. As people began to arrive in town earlier in the week, we had a small barbeque at our apartment. As you can see, there was a lot of wine too. Jose makes a point while telling a story during the barbeque. Amy and Kirstyn pose for the camera...the soon-to-be-nervous bride and her calming Matron of Honor. Two nights before the wedding, we held a rehearsal/welcome dinner at Cinc Sentits for the out-of-town guests. For the first time Amy, Roser and Hal were able to sit down and enjoy the meal instead of serving everyone else. Since there isn't a tradition of rehearsing before the wedding in Spain, we improvised as best we could. Everyone is seated, and the dinner (and speeches) can begin...
Hal poses with Hilary, Amy's Maid-of-Honor, during the welcome dinner. Hal with Jenna, our Canadian friend who is now a genuine Spanish señora. Emily and Javier, our friends from San Francisco who, in addition to traveling all the way to Barcelona, also read two versions of a Pablo Neruda poem during the wedding ceremony. Hilary and her boyfriend Steve. It was generally agreed later that Steve was a very funny guy and was the life of the bachelor party. Kirstyn's sister Kim, seen here taking a break between babysitting and helping to prepare wedding favors. Emily, Amy and Hilary pose for a glamour shot on the sofa at Cinc Sentits.
Random passers-by on the street wonder if the baby in the window might be part of some new theme restaurant. A portrait of Kirstyn during the welcome dinner. After the dinner was underway, toasts were made and gifts were given. Here Kirstyn stands up to make a speech to the bride and groom. Karen, Amy's friend from her high-school years in Barcelona, who now lives in her native Holland. Steve and Eric laugh over someone's witty comment. We were pleasantly amazed that despite never having met each other before, everyone seemed to get along really well from the start. Karen's boyfriend (now-fiancé) Joost, hoping for an update on the score of the football match courtesy of Steve and his mobile phone.
The day before the wedding, and Kirstyn is doing a test-run to prepare for doing Amy's makeup for the big day. The night before the wedding, the girls all got together and held a party for Amy at Hal's apartment, complete with wine, tapas and a really staggering number of lingerie gifts. Emily and Amy share a drink during her bachelorette pary. Amy and her mom in front of a whole shelf full of bridal shower gifts. Chloe decides to see what all the fuss is about, and goes on a search for gifts of her own. It looks like Kirstyn is starting her education early. While the girls were having drinks and exchanging lingerie, the guys headed out for a tapeo and drinks. The first stop was Bar Celta, which you can see here behind Brent, and which specializes in pulpo (octopus) and Galician white wine.
The next stop was a small bar called Tasca el Corral, which specializes in Another couple of bars and a few drinks later, and everyone is feeling very relaxed...as you can tell from this picture in which no two people are looking in the same direction. Jose tells a story to the group, despite not having a beer in his hand to make his point with. Greg and Brent listen intently, but Steve seems skeptical. The evening gets later, but everyone is enjoying themselves and the time flies by. Here Javier seems to be saying, The day after the wedding, we meet for lunch at Barceloneta, where the staff from Cinc Sentits presents us with a very thoughtful gift (even if Greg does look like Bill Clinton and Amy kind of resembles a busty Brooke Shields.) That evening, it's back out for tapas again, this time at Sagardi, a basque tapas bar where the txacolí and pintxos are plentiful. After all the wedding stress, it was nice to have a couple of days to just enjoy spending time with friends.
