Despite our longtime boycott of Starbucks in Barcelona, we found ourselves out and about on a Sunday afternoon with few other options, so we decided to stop for something sweet. Sofia got her first blueberry muffin, and as you can see by the expression on her face, it was a big hit. Amy, Sofia, and Sofia's backlit hair halo go for a walk in the park up the street from our apartment.
Every year at the end of October, Catalans celebrate the castanyada, a festival involving castanyes (chestnuts), moniatos (sweet potatoes), and moscatell (muscatel wine). One of the main figures is the castanyera, who dresses in peasant clothes and brings (or sells) castanyes.

The castanyada is the closest thing to Halloween parties for Catalan school children, and includes special songs and a visit from the castanyera. Sofia wasn't entirely sure what to make of her first one, though. Sofia tries to distract an ardent admirer. Sofia's admirer makes a smooth move, inching closer to get a kiss.
The first kiss...a sweet photo opportunity, but this little boy will most likely have an upper respiratory infection tomorrow. Sure, it seems nice and sweet now, but in fourteen years this will be one of my biggest fears.
